Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. All XJ Non-modified/stock questions go hereXJ (84-01)
All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
Apologies as I suspect this has been asked many times but I've failed miserably to find the topics I'm looking for.
I've got a 2000 Orvis 4.0l on which I want to replace the front brake calipers and hoses, but not sure which calipers are the best? Do I go for the stock Mopar or one of the re-manufactured units? Looking on sites like RockAuto, there is quite a selection of re-manufactured units to choose from 9AC Delco, Cardone, Centric, Raybeston, Omix, etc) but I've no idea which to go for though. After hours of Googling, I'm non-the-wiser as to which are any good? Recommendations anyone? How about Power Stop?
I'm also looking to replace the brake lines at the same time and wonder if it's worth going with stainless steel or sticking with stock (there is no lift kit on the car and if I add one on the future, it'll likely only be 2" so I guess stock length is ok)
I'm UK-based but happy to ship from the US if need be (Covid-19 permitting of course!)
They're the same units as any other 2000 XJ if that helps with your parts search.
I bought reconditioned units for my 97 XJ and they've been great. I got them from the local trade parts supplier/motor factor.
I can't recommend any brands from a Jeep experience but Apec calipers that we are supplied with for other vehicles seem to last. I bought the caliper rebuild kit to do my ones but that was after checking them over to be sure they were salvagable.
Again with brake lines, we make our own and don't use pre-made ones. Depending on length and how they are packaged, they can be a pain to straighten out if folded to make the package smaller. This is from the perspective of an equipped garage though.
While you're doing brake lines, I got this kit of brake flexi hoses (it cost me more when I got it) from Jeepey. New copper washers are also a very good idea and less likely, a new banjo bolt.
The Orvis package is a Grand Cherokee (WJ) option. It won't do much good to ask in the (not Grand) Cherokee (XJ) section as the parts are different between the two Jeeps. And from what I can find, the Orvis edition was only 1995-1997 so I'm not sure why you would find it on a 2000. But my information may be incomplete.
Edit: Yes, my information is incomplete. Apparently there was an XJ Orvis edition but not in the USA, only in Great Britain. So yeah, disregard the above. The advice below still applies.
For what it's worth though, there's not much difference between the brakes on the XJ, no matter which package it has. Pretty much, a caliper is a caliper is a caliper. Cheap ones are cheap and they tend not to last as long. More expensive ones are better. Mopar parts are same quality as everyone else while typically costing a whole lot more. Get some of the better calipers off Rock Auto and call it good.
Thanks for the replies. I guess the main question is whether any of the brands should be avoided? By the sounds of it, they are going to be pretty much the same!
Looking on Rock Auto, the prices vary quite a bit, hence I wondered what, if any, difference there was between them all.
I'm also struggling to work out what is different about the Powerstop for them to be classified as 'Perfornance' by Rock Auto? Marketing hype or actually better?
In my experience with Powerstop, it's mostly hype. I bought a complete 4-wheel set for my WJ with supposedly red powder coated calipers and drilled&slotted discs. First of all, one rear caliper had a blown piston seal right out of the box! Rockatuo sent me a replacement overnight so that wasn't too bad. Then the powder coating turned out to be just paint that burnt off quickly! The "High Performance" ceramic pads overheated and warped the rotors!
My opinion is stick with semi-metallic pads and plain rotors from a good supplier and forget all the performance hype. I've had good luck with NAPA pads and Raybestos rotors. I think I went with AC Delco calipers if I remember correctly.

Braided Stainless Steel brake hoses, in theory should give a slightly firmer pedal feel & provide a faster brake response, due to the Braided Stainless Steel brake hoses to swelling under pressure, like the rubber hoses do. Don't forget about the rubber hose going to the rear differential area.

Also, the XJ body styling continued into about 2007 in China. Look up something like BJC 2500. BJC stands for Beijing Jeep Company. I'm slowly adapting my 2001 North American XJ into a mixed UK Orvis XJ / BJC 2500.
If you dig around, you will also see differences in XJ's produced around the world. When I was in Thailand, the XJ
I looked at didn't have a heater & also there was, I believe rear A/C controls on the back of the center console.
The OP is from England. There is an XJ Orvis version over there.
Pretty much looks like any other XJ out there but does have these subtle differences.
Both exterior and interior.
Which are actually pretty cool IMO.
The best one being the rear spoiler.
Anyway I use Napa calipers. Seeing how I think you are in England guessing you don't have access to a Napa.
But in your list you did mention Cardone. And Napa calipers are just rebranded A1Cardones so....
Not that you can't get a defective rebuilt caliper but it is not one of the problems that come up often.
Not like the luck that guys seem to have with rebuilt steering gear boxes. LOL.
Same with whatever hoses you buy. Should not really be a problem.
As far as the brake lines go I say make your own with the Nicopp stuff.
As some background, I had an original 2000 4.0l XJ Orvis in Patriot Blue from new but sold it a few years back.
Regretted selling it and when an opportunity came up in late 2018 to buy one almost identical to my old car, I jumped at the chance. It needs some restoration to get rid of the dents and scratches, but it's a solid one owner car with immaculate leather interior. XJs are getting pretty scarce in the UK and my ultimate goal is to get her back to as-new condition.
For now, just want to sort out the more urgent items like front brake overhaul and front UK replacement as well and treat any corrosion, especially under the car. After that, it'll be new rear springs, dampers and bushes.
I need some things off your Jeep. LOL.
For starters want your rear seat. Trying to mod mine for headrests.
Also would not mind your tire cover.
I have one from a 5.9 Grand Cherokee but they don't come with the D-rings for the cargo cover. I rigged something up though.
I have the fake wood grain stuff and the spoiler.
Oh and my louvers are functional and not stick on like yours. MLOL.
That spec looks very similar to the 60th Anniversary version in the UK.
I keep looking out for an original black cargo cover but those things are like the proverbial rocking horse **** in the UK!
My original XJ also had the Jeep-supplied front/rear light covers and black tubular rock bars - the later I've failed miserably in finding so I guess I was one of the few in the UK who ordered their car with them on. I also had the neat CD changer and storage unit (like yours) that fits in the indent in the right of the boot/trunk although I had to buy that from a US Jeep dealer as it wasn't on the UK options or parts lists.

Nope just an '00 Sport. Got it into my head to put in all the options that she did not come with.
My Limited/Up Country/Police Version/European Orvis clone build I got it into my head to build.
With some accents from older XJ's and the '98 5.9 Grand Cherokee thrown in.
You can see the CD Changer Storage unit in mine. Believe it to be a dealer installed option and not a factory one.
Believe it or not that was in the Jeep when I bought it 7 years ago.
How long ago was it that you ordered one? Don't think I have ever seen the part number for that anywhere.
Any chance you still know the part number?
I always thought that the spare tire in an RHD Jeep was on the driver's side. Your driver's side not mine. Huh.
The clear headlight covers were purchased from some guy in England off Ebay. $32 USD shipped.
What you really want are factory running boards. LOL.

The CD case was a long time ago with my first XJ. It came from Jeep of Orlando and I'd guess around 2002/3. Really wish I'd kept it when I sold the car! Somewhere I've also got the official Jeep "leather"(!) car bra which I picked up at the same time - just can't find it at the moment!
The spare wheel position is a bit of an oddity as I've seen it on both sides on UK spec cars. My brother's had two XJs,one of which was pre-face and the other is a 1998 Limited and pretty sure his spare is the same side as mine. It does mean you can't see a thing out of the rear side window from the driver's seat ....
