Default C8.25 trac lock swap question

Hey guys my jeep has a open carrier C8.25. I am working on a dackota at work that also has a C8.25 in it with trac lock. My job is replacing the carrier and trashing this one. I was wondering if the the trac lock carrier will bolt into my non trac lock C8.25 axle? The carrier and spiders are in really good shape but I would replace the clutches, retainers, and bearings for good measure since it is already apart. Any info would be great!

Anybody? Has anybody tried doing this before? Searched CF site and a quick search on google but wasn't able to find any info. They are both 29 axles. Just want to find out if the trac lock carrier will fit in an axle that originally had a open carrier in it.

The Trac-Lock is generally referred to as a Trash-Lock.
Even with new clutch pack it won't perform very well off road.

Save yourself the effort for very little return.

I rarely take my jeep off roading so that isn't so much of an issue. I want it more for when it snows.

Save up and get a Tru-Trac.

They don't perform well on road either....recently swapped an axle into my 98 to an open diff to get rid of the "trash lock" because it worked like **** and was very unpredictable.

To answer the op question yes it will. I was gonna do this to mine but I found a Dana 44 for cheap so I abandoned the 8.25 project. I had one in a Dakota and still have one in my Ram and they both worked great for daily drivers and light off road. Not everyone wants a locker or blow $500.00 on a LSD. May I suggest putting new clutches in it before install they are like $60.00 investment from a Dana supplier.

Is trac lock really as bad as you make it sound? I dont hammer on my cherokee and it rarely see anything but pavement.

This is the info I was looking for! If I do the swap I will be investing in a clutch rebuild kit. Its like $40 I would be stupid not to while its out.

On dry pavement it worked just fine but in rain or snow it was awful. It was just as easy to break the tires loose with the trac loc as it was without, the difference is when you break the tires loose with the trac loc it is MUCH harder to regain control. I guess its really a matter of opinion, but I hated it.

Well if I decide to do the swap I will hold onto my open carrier so I can switch back if I really don't like it. Also I have to actually make sure my job wants to throw out the trac lock carrier before I can take it, they say they are getting a whole new carrier but sometimes what they say and what comes are 2 different things. Thanks for your thoughts though! If anybody else has had trac lock I would love to hear what you thought of it.

My $0.02.....can't imagine anybody wanting/prefering an open diff over any traction enhanced diff and a lsd is a traction enhanced diff. For a DD, a lsd is hard to beat. A 1 tire fire open diff being prefered over a 2 tire fire traction enhanced diff?........really? Most folks learn how to lift on the skinny pedal when traction is lost and traction is lost on 1 tire much sooner tha 2 tires. A lsd certainly won't hang with a locker offroad but for pavement wet or dry a lsd is certainly preferable over a open diff.

This is basically what I was thinking/felt about the swap. But I like to keep an open mind about things so I can make a good decision. Thanks for the input!

my trac-loc works perfect at 262k original miles. the key is to add mopar specific limited slip additive to a basic 75w90 or w80 ish gear lubricant. royal purple and all those other "additives already in them" fluids are garbage.

you can swap it, but from my understanding the carriers are different completely between 27 and 29 spline, so be sure yours matches, as the spiders are not cross-compatible between carriers.

you're obviously proficient at setting gears if you're replacing a carrier for a customer, so there's no need to get into checking preload and backlash with you.

They carrier and my axle are both 29 spline spriders. I'm pretty new to rears but have repaired a a couple. I'm pretty confident I can do it with help from friends at work, a good shop manual, and I always have the great people from here to get my question asnwered and my jeep back on the road!!!
