Default A/C Issues

I have a 2001 XJ Limited I bought about 3 weeks ago. Since then I've had to add freon twice because every few days the a/c starts to blow hot air again. Twice I've had a shop put the UV dye in it and they still cannot find the leak.

So yesterday I tried the R-134a-Super-Seal followed by another can of refrigerant and it once again started blowing cold air. This is my last shot before I believe the evaporator should be replaced.

Now I've heard this a HUGE job costing anywhere from $800-$1200 to be repaired at a shop. This is something I can't tackle myself because I'm not really mechanically inclined But living in Georgia where its been 95+degrees and brutal humidity making it feel like 150 degrees I definitely need to get this problem fixed, but I'd hate to drop that kinda coin on it

Doug

You can check to see if the evaporator is leaking using a sniffer.

With the engine running, mode selector to AC panel outlets (10), blower to low, temp selector to max Blue, Place sniffer probe in the center panel outlets. If the evaporator is leaking the sniffer will find it.

Or grab a cup and place it under the car where the ac condesate drips out and catch half a cup or so and check that with a uv light (or bring it the shop and ask them to check it.)

Thanx for the info guys. I'm gonna wait a few more days because the a/c is blowing cold right now. But usually it only lasted about 4 days with regular use. I'm hoping/praying that A/C Seal worked.

The sealer may have worked for now but will likely cause problems the next time that AC system has to be opened up for service. The stuff will harden up wherever it happens to be, clogging up the works. Not only that, but it can contaminate expensive recovery equipment.

Hopefully it will work out for you, but in general people really should stay away from that stuff.

Having said all this there is a new type of sealer available that claims not to have the problems of the old hardening types. I have not seen any real data yet on whether the claims for it are valid, so "caveat emptor" applies...

When I recently recharged my A/C, I found that same link and decided to give the Red Angel a try. I figured I didn't have much to lose and so I took the gamble. It seems to have worked for me, but it's only been a little over a month and half. We'll see if I still have cold air in September!

Red Angel looks interesting if it works as advertised, but I just have not been able to find reports of any real field experience with it. Aside from the leak sealing ability, the main concern would be that claims to not to harden up later and cause problems is legit. (I've seen situations with the older type of sealers where serious damage was done.) In general I'm always suspicious of "fix in a can" type products.

Keep us posted as to how it works out for you!
