Default A/C compressor starts and stops when idling// low idle

hey there, i am sure there is a forum in here that'll explain this, but i was looking and couldn't find one, so i decided to make one

anyways my 1992 4.0 xj is awsome, but lately is running like crap. i spent all of today trying to fix things; ie replaced water pump. new battery. replaced lots of vacuum hoses that were cracked and then some that weren't just to be safe. well it runs better but here are my 2 problems

1. my voltage gauge goes from 14 v to 10-12 when im driving. it likes to sit low most of the time.

2. the idle is better with new vacuum hoses, but the a/c compressor will not stay running at idle, so i'm not sure if it's idling low, or if the compressor is bad or if i have a bad alternator. if i give it the slightest gas, the compressor will run great.

im considering just throwing money at this till it's better with some tune ups; fuel pump, redoing my a/c stuff, new throttle position sensor.

any imput would be awsome before i spend all my money

your volt meter is acting like mine does. what i did was check the actual battery voltage on the terminals themselves and with everything on(lights, ac, radio, fog/driving lights) it read between 13.41 and 14. 45 so its just the gauge for mine. may want to try and check the same. i also checked my alternator and it came up to gauge the same volts. should try to do that. and with the low idle, i asked that on here and you can see what all the guys said.

hope it helps you

ya, well i tested it, and the battery was dead, so thats why i got a new one. they said my alternator passed on the diodes but failed the low end:S whatever that means, so i'd like to put a new one on, but 1 hour ago i am pretty sure i blew a head gasket, so i dunno if im going to be doing anything soon. looks like there's coolant in my oil
