Yesterday I recharged my 2001 xj with freon from the cheap rechargeable cans from autozone. Well the compressor kept turning off after blowing cold air after 10-15 minutes. After I turn off the a/c 5 minutes then turning it on again it blows cold again then it turn off again. I thought it needed more freon so I bought an extra can. Once I finished the 2 nd can I turned on the a/c and freon started spitting all over the place. It was coming out from a little valve like bolt in the rear of the compressor. Is that normal? Maybe I put too much freon? Any advice on what I can do before I take it to the shop???

 

Not normal. Closed system so it shouldn't come out at all. You need gauges to check system pressure.

 

^^^^^^ this, It sounds as if you overfilled it.

 

X3, that is likely the pressure release valve and generally means it is overfilled significantly. Like others said you need gauges, good ones the measure both the high and low side (Harbor Freight has a set for around $50, most auto parts stores should as well), not the cheap ones that come attached to a can and only measure the low side (those are about worthless).

 

So at what pressure should hi and low be running? Anyone know if they they got rentals gauges at autozone? Sorry kinda new to this A/c stuff

 

The low side should be between 35-45, and the high side should be 225-300. But that all depends on the ambient temperature.
