Default A/C Compressor Issues?

We had a record high temperature for March in Colorado Springs yesterday. Yeah, you Southern folks can laugh at the high 70s setting a record, but I actually ran the A/C in my XJ coming home from work.

The A/C seemed to work fine and blew cold air no problem. However, whenever I was at a stop light, the Jeep would have a rumble to it and I could hear a whining noise coming from the A/C compressor.

I'm pretty good with working on vehicles, but I admit I don't know a lot about A/C systems. So...

- The previous owner of my 2000 XJ did NO maintenance

- With 113k on the odometer, is there some type of maintenance the A/C compressor requires?

- I've heard of an "oil charge" for A/C compressors, but don't know when that's required.

- I have a 4.0 engine

Thanks.

I would have an evap and recharge on the ac system and fill your compressor with oil too just to be sure

A/C is a closed system, you don't consume fluid naturally. You might have a leak though, and in that case you would need a top-off. Rumble indicates that the bearing is getting dirty, so that is something else--it could seize on you. Find a shop you trust or a local Jeep club and ask for some help diagnosing the noise.
