Very possible. Mine did the same thing, then locked up hard and snapped the belt. Luckily I was in the parking lot at work, so I was able to go get a compressor and belt so I could swap it out and get home.

If it's making a noise whether the A/C is on or off then its likely to be the compressor pulley bearing. When the A/C is off the compressor itself won't be turning. Bearings ar $15 on ebay and a one hour repair. If you leave it and it breaks up or seizes then your belt will go and you will be stranded...

Well they would say that wouldn't they? The bearing is there on ebay - there are several different sellers - the clutch pulley comes off in 15 minutes (you will need a puller) and you have to press the old bearing out, the new one pops in and you are good to go. I did it a few weeks ago, it's an easy fix.

Fair warning: You cant fix the bearing on all models. Do some research first. Mine went last summer (the lip that holds the bearing into place actually) and I thought it was the bearing. After finding bearings for like $10 bucks, I found out that you cant replace the bearing on mine (1999) because of the lip that holds it in place....which is what actually failed on mine. So, because the stupid little formed lip on the compressor broke, I had to buy a completely new compressor for $229 bucks. NICE!

At very worst you can buy a whole new clutch assembly (around $70 on ebay) which includes a new pulley, bearing, clutch and coil - effectively everything on the front of your compressor. Plus you dont have to evac and refill the system to change it out.
