FWIW, when we installed our new compressor, dryer, liquid line, hose manifold 2 years ago, we added 1/2 of the new oil to the dryer and the other 1/2 to the new compressor. That's not advice on how to add oil to a new system, but rather just how we did it (that meet with your approval, rich?)........and after a few minutes (plus 2 years) our a/c and compressor are still working great (knock on wood).
Don't want to go there again, with u rich......

At our shop we charge a ac diag, 129.99 with 16 oz freon. 2.00 each additional ounce, once we find the leak, we evac it, see how much comes back out, then we just charge for the diffrence.

DJB - that's not exactly the correct procedure, but it worked. The risk is possibly overfilling the crankcase with too much oil.
Lots of people just blindly install a new/rebuilt compressor with no idea how much oil is already in it. Some come full, some empty.
If it's empty adding oil with the freon may not get enough in the compressor - then it seizes.
If it's already full it can lock up. Most have a sheet that tells you, but a used one it's best to check it yourself.
BTW - If the compressor you replaced worked but just leaked - it makes a fantastic on board air system.
The simple dipstick avoids trouble.
It's not Black Magic, Voodo or Rocket Science, but there are some basics to follow for a good long lived system.
It's not unlike your engine's crankcase - to much or too little and ---.
If you get involved with AC very often, I really suggest getting one of those Electronic Detectors.
