Buying shocks based on length vs amount of lift
I need shocks. They are limiting my travel. My xj was already lifted when I bought it. Supposed to be a 3" pro comp lift via coils, spacers and AAL.
I measured my rear shocks and extended they are at about 20.5". Not sure how to buy the shocks. Looking at:
pro comp 322500 extended 22.5" collapsed 13.7" $37.95
superlift 85121 extended 25.0" collapsed 15.0" $33.95
tuff country 62261 extended 26.5" collapsed 16.0" 39.95
How do I choose?

i went with bilstein 5100 series.. put them on yesterday and felt the improvement instantly. i got the ones for 4" lift. they were 302 for 4 from shockwarehouse.com with free shipping. i would definatly recomend them. very easy to install even with 4 broken rear top mount bolts... but thats another story. i will give you a measurement later on today so you know how they sit

Thanks for the reply. While the billies are nice, I'm going to stick to one of these brands. I have been puttin too much into the xj, and don't want to spend that much on shocks.
Do you know the measurements of extended and collapsed for the 4" lift shocks? What kind of lift do you have?

Measure from mount to mount then add the amount of flex to that for example your measurement is 20" so i would want a totally extended shock of 26" and collapsed at 14" that would give you plenty of flex . Always remember you can hang from a shock all day but collapse them once and its all over.

shocks
I know on the rear you can relocate the lower shock mount and give yourself another 4 or 5 inches of travel winston427 did it that way and looks great plus it increased ground clearance.

I just read about that. Also read about the bar pin eliminators, and those will extend shocks travel another inch or so.

I have a BB. I netted about 3.5" all around. I have added 2 leafs per side and put zj v8 springs on the front with 2" spacers.

Here, try this. You will have to disconnect your shocks and allow the springs to extend fully to take your extended measurements.
