I got my old loaded 00 Cherokee Classic 2 years ago with 118k perfect condition other then some sun fading on the roof since it was black, and loaded with just about everything (power everything, tint, keyless entry, cruise, factory foglights, 16" gunmetal rims, infinity sound with 6 disc under the rear seat, sunroof etc) just missing the leather, for $2400 from a private owner..
Around here they go for crazy money even at dealer auctions. Unless they are complete junk. My buddy has been looking for one for me for over a year. He can't believe what some of these 12 year old Jeeps with over 125k are going for.

So I looked at another jeep today

Details:
2000 Cherokee Sport
At a lonely used car dealer lot, supposedly purchased by dealer before it went to auction after a trade in
100,000 miles
Green Exterior
Grey Interior
Aftermarket stereo
Believe it has ABS
Body: B+
Interior B+
Not many rattles
Steering seems pretty good
Newer Tires
Asking $5500

Thoughts?

I'm trying to get a hold of the owner so I can see this:

2000 Cherokee Sport
78,000 miles!
Garage kept
Family owned
States it's in awesome shape.
Only wants $4500

yes that's my #1 choice! I have a red BMW so they will match

Just waiting for the damn guy to call me... craigslist email addy was all I had. I was going to shoot over to see it tonight and possibly drive home with it.

no word yet...

One thing though... the Green one doesn't have part time 4x4... any big difference between the transmissions that just have 4-High vs. also having part-time 4x4?

I've been looking at a ton of XJ's, myself, and I am blown way by the high prices I've been seeing. I think the fact that it is the dead of winter and so many people are looking for 4x4's has something to do with it. I'm betting that once Spring get's here, these same Jeeps will be $1000-$2000 less...

A lot of the price difference I think is regional. You get down into the DC/Baltimore/Philly area and the prices don't seem as high.

Probably just supply and demand (especially during winter when 4x4 is a bigger selling point.)

Wait 'til $4/gal gas hits... prices will drop like a stone...

Asking $6k
120,000 miles
New tires
new valve gaskets
new "wiring"
new timing belt
Supposedly a lot more new items and is being sold at an autobody shop.
First concern- why was wiring replaced? Second concern- ask to speak to the mechanic that put the timing belt in. Id love to hear the bs story behind that.

^^ yeah that silver one didn't work out.

Guy is selling an 01 cherokee with 133k. He is a 60+ year old retired guy who picks them up at auctions, makes sure they are in good running condition and sells them for a small profit. I drove the one below. Seemed to run great. However there was one issue.

The front wheel transfer case seemed to be a bit wet... guessing a small leak. There was oil on it, not dripping wet, but definitely wet. I'm curious how much of an issue that is? Does it need to get repaired? Will it effect the 4x4?

Also it was a bit slow on startup which got me worrying a tad. But overall seemed in good condition. Asking $5400

I took a picture: Didn't come out so well but just to get an idea.

Here is the jeep:

One of my employees recently tried buying a XJ after he blew up his truck. Everyone envy's my XJ and they all want one. He tried the craigslist thing and everyone that was not at stupid dealer prices was sold within 2 days. These Jeeps are common like someone said and with the proper waiting and channels you can pick up a driveable and trust worthy 91-95 which in my opionin are the years to have, XJ for 1000-2000 max. These prices of 4000+ for 98 and up XJ's are outragous if you think about it. Why would you spend that type of money on a vehicle that in some cases have over 150,000 miles regardless of there reputation. I know the 4.0 has a longer longevity than most motors but to me spending more than 1500$ on a 4wd that has over 100K is not a good decision. This is not a good time time to buy a 4wd being winter and I also realize here in the northeast these and all 4wd "suv's" are at a premium due to it being harder for some people to get finacing on new vehicles. I was able to get 3000$ trade in on my Mercury Mountainner when I bought my new JK this summer. Blue Book was 3800 on that and it had trans issues and about 105,000miles. Im sure that truck is on a dealer lot or someone was duped into buying it for 6000-7000 because they cleaned it up and put a 6 month warranty on it. Try to reach out to people you know and ask if anyone they know has a XJ they want to sell. You just might get lucky. GOOD LUCK

I can't believe the difference in price from UK to USA. I bought my 1998 Jeep Cherokee 2.5L Sport a year ago, it had done 76,000 miles and full service history. Paid £1650 for it. Lovely drive, only minor problems so far. It was the only vehicle (other than a Landrover) to get in and out of our road this winter.
Hope you find the right vehicle at the right price.

ABS had the dana 35 rear
full time 4x4 has a np 242 t/c i believe..not sure

Happy hunting... and hope you find what you are looking for

The whole cylynder head issue is not that big of a deal don't worry about it. It occurs BC from 2000-01 Jeep switched to a different company to make there heads and the company put what's called coil packs in them which when the vehicle overheated the head cracks. I have not had this problem and I've had mine for six months. Jeep and quadrotec I do believe both offer different heads to switch out and then you wont have a problem. Or just get a temp gauge. Just my opinion but I love my Jeep.-fred
