I would go to a blue book value web site like kbb.com and get a sense of what these vehicles are worth before shopping around too much. It will help you cut down the amount of time you're spending on each individual vehicle.
I also agree to be patient and a good one will fall in your lap. These are not rare vehicles. Be sure to check out eBay too. You may be surprised how many cars are located in your area.

Private Party on a 98 is $3000, Retail is $5000. I'll check out ebay. But I like to look at a car in person before purchasing anything.

don't you need a dealer license to buy at auction?
ebay came up pretty empty... 3 within 50 miles.
This was the only decent one:

Many of the listings I saw on eBay when shopping for my Jeep were actually through dealers/wholesalers, and you were able to inspect them in person if you wanted. Don't let the eBay aspect of it put you off.
Good luck! Sounds like you're taking your time, and that's awesome.

Watch out for dealers...
They probably pick these Cherokees up at auctions for $2000 or less and clean then up some and charge you an arm and a leg...
I got my old loaded 00 Cherokee Classic 2 years ago with 118k perfect condition other then some sun fading on the roof since it was black, and loaded with just about everything (power everything, tint, keyless entry, cruise, factory foglights, 16" gunmetal rims, infinity sound with 6 disc under the rear seat, sunroof etc) just missing the leather, for $2400 from a private owner..

How's your classic holding up and current mileage? With the winter here they are a commodity.

Great Condition 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 with 97,000 miles. 4.0 Liter, Inline 6 engine, 4 speed automatic transmission. Has a full 2 inch lift kit with 30'' Cooper All Terrain/Roads (ATR's). Stock steel wheels with plastic chrome hubcaps. Front brush guard with 2 KC 100w daylighters. Gibson exhaust and muffler(cat-back) sounds amazing. Runs Excellent, Interior in Mint Condition. A great little 4 wheel drive vehicle to get through tough winters and provides a lot of fun in the summers.

thats exactly what they do and try to make huge profit. Since these are old trucks they are the small Bob's dealers. It's extremely hard finding these FS by Owner. The first one posted is FSBO. Half the time they are gone the day they go up for sale or are complete junkers.

I now have a 99 classic with 142k on the clock!
When I bought my '98 Cherokee, I was lucky enough to have a best friend who was a Dodge/Jeep mechanic. Right away he noticed that the intake manifold had a crack, you could hear it 'ticking' (goes away once it's warmed up). I couldn't even tell what it was, but he knew. As I recall, he said it was a relatively common issue that they addressed in later models. It wasn't a deal breaker because it still ran great, but it was a great bargaining chip in getting the dealer to lower the price. Also, look for respray paint jobs. As others above stated, dealers will buy it off the auction lot for $2k, throw a $99.99 paint job on the skin and try to sell it at premium price (they listed mine for $4600, 112k miles).
I also learned another trick. I called the lot the day before I went to look at it and scheduled a time early in the morning. I got there about 40 minutes early. The first thing my friend did was check the radiator, and found that it had been running long enough to get hot. The dealer said "well, we had to move it on the lot". Red lights went off and my buddy said "so it took you what... thirty minutes to move it?" The dealer walked away without answering. My friend explained that they were A) probably trying to warm it up enough to hide the tick from the manifold crack and B) making sure that when I started it for the test drive that it would fire right up and run smooth. I'm not that savvy, but I learned a lot that day. Flip ALL the switches, make sure every thing electric works, check for steering slop/loose ride, etc. etc. And if you can, take a friend who's a mechanic!
P.S.- I've been a forum lurker here for a while, just never had anything worthwhile to add.. glad I finally did.
