Default buying cherokee... need help

hey all...

first id like to say this is an awesom forum...

its been one of the only cherokee forums that are still active...

anyways...

im wanting to buy a cherokee. i live in florida and while id love to have a wrangler with the rag top id much rather have a cherokee so i can put an audio system in and make it sound good. i also would like to do a little wheelin lol. i have a budget rite now of around 3-4k for the truck itself (i realize this is an suv but in fl we call them trucks regardless lol). i want to get the 4.0 in it too. my plans are to put it up 6.5" with the rough country lift. than putting 33-35's underneath ithere come the questions.. lol..

what are things to look for?? im also wondering.. do the dana axles come on these or do u have to put them in aftermarket? i have also heard some bad about the transfer cases on these... is this true?? if so what should i look for to make sure i dont have one of the weaker ones??

thanks alot guys

Make sure you get a Chysler REAR END! The dana 35 rear is ****! But the front should have a dana 30. Yes they come with them.

Both of the stock TCases are very decent on the XJ's, unless you are building a very extreme rig you wont run into any problems with it. Look for the c8.25 rear end (it is flat on the bottom of the pumpkin).

Basically all Cherokees have 4.0s, some have the 2.5s, but most that you will find have the 4.0, and if you want to check if one your looking at has a Chrysler or D35 rear there's a tag on the axle that has the model & gear ratio. And if the reason you're not gettin a TJ or a YJ is because the sound system might get stolen, you could always buy CD player Lock Box Center Consule.

Welcome
Thanks... yea i was hearing that from sum1 who was a lil shakey ont cherokee facts... would u consider a rig w/ a 6.5" lift and 33's or 35's an extreme rig? im planning to do some mudding in sum thick stuff.. Thanks.

To big*blue*cherokee*: i didnt want just the headunit... i wanted to do the whole 9 yards... tv, new speakers, subs, amp for speakers and amp for subs.... and i wanted to enter the sound comp we have here in daytona call spring break nationals... in a wrangler the sound escapes too easily giving a bad SPL level in the car. aking it quieter..... but thanx for the suggestion..

If you are planning on some heavy mudding and say 35's doesn't matter what rear end it comes with you are going to need something beefier then a 8.25 or a D35...Something more like a D44 or a Ford 8.8....That's just my opinion anyways..

As for sound system like that you will need to upgrade to the 130 amp alternator as well as a 2 battery setup..When you do all this audio mods post pics and keep us updated on the build...

and i will defineatly make sure ill keep pics on both the lift and the audio set up... im starting off with only pushing 3000 watts max but will eventually go up to 6k.... where do u think i should go about finding the bigger alt.?

33s will be fine on your 8.25" rear end. You might also think about re-gearing your axles if you plan on doing any highway driving. Of course, Florida is a little flatter than West Virginia, so you might get away with stock gears for a while. Another thing I haven't seen anyone mention is an SYE (slip-yoke eliminator). With 6.5" of lift, you will definitely need one. But for 33s, you shouldn't need any more than 5" of lift IMO. But you'll still probably need an SYE.

If you want good audio just get a nice muffler. A sound system will just shake the poor cherokee to death especially on the trails.

You could actually get away with a 2k Rig and spend the extra on a nice Rubicon Express lift for 6.5in. Rough Country is nice but I would rather have something a lil Stronger if you are going that big. You will need a D-44 or 8.8 at the least for 35's You could get away with 8.25 on 33's but it will still strain it. I would suggest Regearing regardless of how flat the land is if you are turning 35's. The t-case on a Cherokee is pretty strong Both my rigs have the 242 which will shift in to all-time 4wd great for everything, also doesn't need a t-case drop or Sye till have 3.5 in of lift. The 231 is another great T-case but doesn't have all time 4wd and you will need a t-case drop or SYE for anything above 2 in. I probable am forgetting stuff but i have 3 broke fingers and i am tired of typing lol.

If you are planning on going that big I would definitely buy a lil older Cherokee so you can beat the hell out of it. This is a sickness and one cherokee will not be enough for you. So save the nice rig for once you got everything down pat.

And also as you and TrueBlue both said... i did plan on getting them both regeared... i just thought evn though the gears would b able to hod up for a little while itll be better to regear in the first place and not tear anything up... and also i was gonna put in the sye kit for sure... thanx for enduring the for me with the fingers..lol... and i was mainly just looking for a truck that can last me 2-3 years... with everything ive been hearing about these babies... i dont think ill have a problem with that... im getting to love these things more and more and i dont even have one yet!!! lol Thanks alot guys

RE is a more complete kit with a few more components that are of better quality. RE is known to be of higher quality but that has been debatable for some time.

Sure it will last, just the joints it uses will not be as well built as the RE's but you will get buy with the kit.
