I'm guessing that this piece of seemingly busted-off plastic is why my liftgate latch won't work, right? Assuming I have to buy a whole new latch assembly... is it very hard to install?

I've been running for a few years with a zip tie in there.

 

Ziptie goes where? Like... around the metal ledge and then the broken plastic piece catches the edge of the zip tie?

 

I ran the zip tie around the "threaded" rod to keep the red latch from moving up.

 

Is this not my issue?

 

Ahhh, that's another problem.
The aftermarket ones break there.

You'll have to get another one.
I believe it is a Dorman part 83210.
Cheap but they don't last long.
