burping a closed system
The post a few down from mine about overheating made me wonder just how to burp a closed coolant system as mine is. Is it easier, harder, or the same either way. Hopefully this will help with my cooling issue.
Easiest way - next time you replace the thermostat, drill two 1/8" holes in the flange, about 1/4" from the edge, and 180* apart. Install with one hole at 1200 and the other at 0600 - the system will then take care of itself.
Easy-ish way - jack up the rear, so that the engine slopes down toward the front. Use a 7/16" box wrench or deep six-point socket, and carefully loosen the temperature gage sensor at the driver's side rear of the cylinder head. Add coolant fairly slowly until it consistently comes out around that sensor (air bubbles/pockets go away,) and reinstall the sensor. I find it helps to coat the threads with RTV Copper before you put it back in - that makes it easier to pull out the next time, and will still preserve the ground to the cylinder head.
