Mines a dog with 235/75's (around 29" diameter). I noticed a slight difference going from 225/75's to the 235's. I can only imagine that it would get worse with 31's. Its fine offroad, but kind of a bummer being the "slow jerk" when taking off from a light in traffic.

I know its not an XJ, but my 1990 Ranger has the 2.3 liter motor, 5 speed, 4x4, 4.10s and HAD 31s. Around town its a blast. First gear is deep enought to manage just fine. But on the highway its not as much fun, I can get to 80 with a bit of trouble, but forget trying to pass. 5th gear is all but useless. Although, when I using it to commute (100 miles a day round trip), I WAS getting 26-28 MPG... Pretty good considering the lift AND the big baja type front fenders.
Since it is a trail oriented rig now though, I slipped 33s on it, but haven't driven it lately (dead slave cylinder). If I was smart, during my D30 swap, I SHOULD go 4.88s...
