Bumper question. What's the difference...

...between the '96 & older and the '97 & newer bumpers? I've searched for and read a number of threads but haven't stumbled across that info yet.

I see bumpers (oem included) listed as being for either the older or the newer and then I see some listed as fitting '84 - '01. I know the end caps are different.

The reason I ask is because I kinda like the Rugged Ridge Tube Bumpers But they are listed as being for '84 - '96. Mine is a '98.

Yes. '96 & older the front flares go to the bottom of the fender. '97 & newer the flare stops at the bumper caps.

I believe 84-96 XJ's have a slightly, and I do mean slightly, wider bumper since the caps are smaller. I could be wrong, but in any case, the bumper mounts the exact same way for all XJ's so the bumper you're looking at will work fine.
