Broke something tonight and now the 4x4 wont engage

I have a 2000 Jeep cherokee sport and it looks like i broke some sort of joint in the driver side front. The 4x4 wont work. any ideas? ill try and post some pictures up in the morning.

are there any other symptoms? noises? driving like crap? etc.

need to be more specific axle u joint driveshaft linkage could b anything
