So I was driving down 70 (in MD) and when i would put on the gas I noticed it actually deccelerate. Then it really started to not respond and I heard a knocking sound so I pulled over and when I did and shut it off, my engine started to smoke like a chimney. I looked in the engine bay and the oil filter, distributer, valve lines, and the control arms were all covered in oil.
When I got a tow from a buddy, I started it up and it sounded horrrible! My buddy says I mightve shot a rod...how do I fix this myself? And check for other things??

That sucks man I am sorry. Your gonna need a new engine. Start calling junk yards and checking Craigslist I got my engine 45,000 miles or so (4.0 high output) for around $700 and I put it in my self good luck.

Course you'll check the oil. (curious if there is a puddle under where it sat for 5 mos!) If it will idle at all without sounding like it's about to hurt someone....you can pull one plug wire at a time and maybe find which cylinder.
At least once I had a push-rod maken a racket pounding on the inside of the valve cover. (not a Jeep). Also the bolts holding the torque converter to the torque plate are known to loosen and cause a BAD racket. (viewed behind the dust cover on the bottom of the bell-housing). Nither should cause the oil to be out where it doesn't belong though.

Deff check head gasket, ive had a couple times where I coulda swore I blew a motor up and it turned out to be head gasket. But there is a chance the motor is junk... Id drop the oil pan and see what it looks like in there first

Well, I took a quick look today guys and indeed oil shot into the coolant tank...but on a lighter note mybuddy came though with sealing me a deal for 200 on a 93 full engine with a little less than 100k on in with a bunch of new parts so hopefully will be gettin that this weekend and be on the road again after christmas! Phew!!

(and, sorry, hope it's not as bad as it sounds) If you DID throw a rod, I hope you got at least 250K out of it!
