So you're saying it was still running but the wheel locked up and RPM's wouldnt move? Is it a manual or automatic? If its a manual then it will seem like its running when it dies in gear, but really its just turning the engine with the weight of the vehicle. Just like you can get a rolling start and drop the clutch to crank one.
Open the hood
Find broken parts
Apply Duct Tape
Repeat until all popping is eliminated.

Turn the key to run. Listen for a buzzing for a second from the fuel tank area. If you don't hear it, your fuel pump is dead (though I don't think that would pop)
Crank it and have your buddy put a screwdriver in the wire going from the coil to the distributor, and hold it near ground (the frame, body, etc) If it sparks (or if he is holding it wrong, he screams), you have a spark.
Next repeat this process with each of the six plug wires.
If you have spark and fuel pressure, your problem is beyond my knowledge.

Your statement does not make sense to me. If your battery is dead, how does it crank and crank. You may have a weak battery and you may hear a buzzing of a relay or the clicking of the starter solenoid.
Maybe you broke the timing chain, this is just a guess. The loud pop is either fuel and combustion related as in a backfire or mechanically related as in something metalic broke.
Charge the battery, turn the ignition on and you should hear the fuel pump prime the system. Have someone by the fuel tank to listen. See if your electrical items work but not too long as you do not want to run the battery down.
Pull a spark plug lead and check for a spark when someone cranks the engine. Remove a spark plug and with a finger, if possible, or with a compression tester see if you are getting compression while someone cranks the engine.
This is just a start to see what you have. Do this carefully and safely. Stay clear of any moving parts.
Maybe we can narrow this down.
Make a note of how thing happen cause dead battery and just cranks and cranks do not go together. Maybe you are talking in general terms but you need to be specific.

When it is cranking is the belts turning, I would pull the valve cover and make sure all pushrods are pumping, Did you run the battery dead from cranking, from your info i could guess that the throttle cable was the last thing holding your engine on and when you gassed it, well hell your engine just fell out and now this is the reason it wont start.

5 will getcha 10 that the timing chain went. Gunshot noise was a backfire. Pop the distributor cap, have a buddy watch to see if the ignition rotor turns as you crank the motor over. First thing I would check.
