When I push on my break pedal in my 1998 Cherokee my breaks do not engage with my pedal slowly going to the ground while making a continual hissing sound like air leaking. Any idea on what the cause could be anyone?

sounds like a leak somewhere, possibly the master cyl is leaking into the brake booster. or the cups inside the master cyl are toast and the master cyl is leaking into itself...sorta
but i agree pump the brakes and look for leaks in the lines or where the master cyl attaches to the brake booster
