I had a theft recovery '91 that had grooved rails. Not really a problem at first, but towards the end, especially when it was cold, I'd go to hit the brakes and the pad would be hung on the groove. Man when it let go....BANG. First time it did it, scared the crap outta me.

Just pull off the calipers and run your finger across the rail. If it feels anything but completely smooth, it's grooved.
