Default Brake issue

I am having issues with my brakes and wondered if anyone could give me a hand diagnosing it. My brakes work fine sometimes and other times the pedal goes all the way to the floor before I get brakes. When it does this it locks up the brakes and my brake lite comes on. Anyone have any ideas on what this might be?

X2 - bleeding your brakes might help too.

When it works it seems to hold steady. What is the best way to check for a vacuum leak?
