Default Brake drum chirp

Backtrack to June of this year...had a rear wheel cylinder leak so I took the Jeep to a shop to get new brake lines and new shoes/drums on the rear.

Picked the Jeep up, noticed a day or two after that there's a chirping noise while driving from the rear and goes away as soon as I hit the brakes. It changes with temp and humidity, so some days it's quiet, other's its noisy. Figured the shoes were too tight or the drums are warped. Took it back to the shop and the owner took it apart, didn't see anything wrong so he just put it back together. No surprise...it came back. Took it back in and he sent the drums out to be machined, he said they were so bad that he had to get new ones. Great! He put new drums and shoes on, and the noise was gone for a week or two and now it's back.

I wish he let me bring in my own parts...getting irritated that I'm going to have to take it back yet again. Is there something special about XJ rear brakes? At this point, I don't know if I should give him another chance or try for a refund.

Not sure if he did a full hardware kit, he has the gift of gab so you don't get to ask anything. Lol.
A kit like this is what he should have used?

yup, that is the one. In my case it took care of a chirp/clunk that started after a brake job that included new drums. I was told everything from lubricating the yoke to replacing axle bearings. Finally after months of frustration, and process of elimination, the only thing left was the springs and hardware. Replaced all of it and haven't heard a peep, er, chirp since...

I always replace the springs and hardware when I service my drums. It's cheap and prevents frustrating noises like these.

Update on this. Would really like some input. Other stuff has gotten in the way since I made this thread (was in the shop for 3 weeks getting new floor pans!) and I still haven't taken the Jeep back to the guy yet. Now, I rarely hear the noise. I hear it faintly every now and then, but it has diminished. Is that possible? I'm thinking the brake drums could've been a bit on the tight side and now they've self adjusted. I did check the receipt and it does say he put new hardware in, so I'm hoping that's true.

On one hand I still feel like I should take it back, but I think the guy could be a loaded cannon...and on the other, if it seems like it's self soothing, let it. Ideas? Thanks!

It's certainly possible. If the adjustment was a bit too tight they may have worn in a little which is why you're not really hearing the noise anymore. And I wouldn't doubt he put new hardware in. It's much easier to just pop the springs and let everything fall instead of trying to save each piece when you're working on drums.

Check parking brake sticking on due to rusted cable causing shoes to drag.
