so what all do you need to redo your gears? I have a d35 and I want to go up to 4.10 gears. What all would one need to make the conversion? If you have done this please tell me everything I need? I have room in my budget to do it I think, but Im not necessarily sure because I have no idea what it requires to do it.

that D35 will be fine for normal everyday driving, its when you put 32's or 33's on your jeep and do some heavy off-roading is when it will break, i usually see them break when a jeep goes to bouncing a little bit...

I just put my BFG AT 31's on 3 days ago. I had a 235/75 on there before... I can definitely feel the difference & the ole gas needle seems to be in a bigger hurry to get to the left side. Power wise, it's ok, I can tell I'm turnin bigger tires but the performance is acceptable. Crap.. it's an XJ, not a race car so I'm fine with it.

is that why a lot of people go with the d44? I do want to do some wheeling (plan on going next weekend) so i dont want to break my axel. I guess I could just start saving for the 44 and when I break the 35 replace it then. But when I get a 44 i would have to replace the gears in that too huh?

One day I want to go to 33's but I plan on getting everything done before i make that jump (bigger lift sye and stroked engine) and i guess a new axel should be one of those purchases

You could go with the 8.25 or the D44, if u can find a D44 cheap enough i would upgrade to that, its only marginally better than the 8.25 but it is better. i have the 8.25 and may switch out for a d44 if a buddy of mine will give me the one out of his parts jeep. you would only have to replace the gears if they aren't the same as the front rear end u have (D30). if their the same gears as front then its just a swap in swap out thing. you can go wheeling with the D35, just take it easy if you've got tires over 31's, if you dont pound the skinny pedal that axle will be fine for you.

U have the D35? I think you would be fine, 31's, 4:10's and a 4 banger shouldn't break that axle unless you really tear into her. you will know if she will hold up after a few rounds of playing. my 8.25 has been fine for me and im pretty mean to my xj.

so i intalled my 3" kit and 31's this weekend and I really havent noticed a huge drop in my power (didnt hace a lot b4 anyways) and the gas mileage hasnt dropped much at all. Im going to take it out on a trail in puyallup next weekend. There is a hill on the way to fort lewis that I can tell is pushing it but aside from that I cant complain. If you plan to do a lot of wheelin' eventually you will want to upgrade your axle. My verdict on the washington driving would be to wait until then to change your gears. Ill post again after a week with it like this

my 97 xj got like 13mpg before i put my 31s on, theyre 31x9,5 super swamper TSL radials, and it stayed the same after i put the 31s on, then I cleaned my cap and rotor and it jumped up to 16,5! stock gears, cryco 8,25 rear, spare on the roof with 4 lights, nates4x4 front winch bumper, not exactly aerodynamic
