Default Blower or Controls? Is the question

Ok sometime this summer my 01 Cherokee only works on HIGH, I was wondering if there were any issues with either of these or what one might be causing this? Thanks in advance!!

Its Neither. Its your blower resistors. The resistors control the speed of you A/C blower. If the resistors go bad then your A/C blower speed will only work on HIGH. Replace those and you will be good to go.

Merriam Webster had to say what Jamaicanmecrazy had to say also
rheostat

One entry found.

Main Entry: rheo·stat Pronunciation: \ˈrē-ə-ˌstat\ Function: noun Date: 1843 : a resistor for regulating a current by means of variable resistances
— rheo·stat·ic \ˌrē-ə-ˈsta-tik\ adjective

So what is a rheostat?????? A resistor.

Hey JeepersCreepers, want to play with capacitors next?

This is a Rheostat

This is a Blower Resistor

This is what he needs.

First picture is a potensionmeter aka a pot aka also a rheostat which is a resistor.
Second you have right.

Sorry I grew up around this stuff, Brother and Grandfather both electronic techs and tube radio fans.

DUH. I know the first picture is a resistor. He doesnt need a rheostat. He needs a blower resistor.

My appologies,
If that is the way you see it.
Take a look at who is following all my post and commenting after the fact and egging it on.
I won't bother to post the correct terms anymore.

The people in 1843 must have been wrong also

Sounds like a stupid question but my XJ has the same problem. Are the resistors on the control or the blower itself?

For the heck of it, the usual problem is the blower resistors, yes. And in typical parlance, a rheostat is a variable resistor, of which there are none. There is a selector switch selecting different circuits, which have different set resistances. A rheostat was actually a specific type of variable resistor even, but I would give way on that if we were talking about some other kind of variable resistor.

If you don't agree that's fine, just call it what the manufacturer or the replacement parts companies call it. I'll let anyone who so chooses that line of reasoning to look it up themselves.

I agree with you. The switch selects the different resistor for the proper blower speed. Now if its only working on high then the blower resistor pack is bad. Replace that and it will work. The blower resistors are usually located by the evaporator. Im not sure where they are on an XJ cause I havent looked but its either mounted on the firewall in the engine bay or most likely inside near the blower. I has usually 4 or 5 or 6 wires going to it. I hope I was some help.
