Default Blinker issue...driving me nuts

1997 Cherokee Country

I just noticed that when my left turn signal is on.....both turn signals in the rear are flashing. The right turn signal works as it should.

Any ideas where to start...thanks in advance....

I don't know how long this has been going on but I'm sure to get pulled over if I don't get it fixed.

You probably have a bad bulb somewhere. I would check them and make sure they are free of corrosion and that they aren't bad.

If your fluid is topped off and the bulbs are ok I'd go to the multi-function switch next.

Blinker fluid was a little low so I topped it off.

What is weird is that the owners manual calls for 1157's....you know...the round-type 2-prong bulbs. So I bought 6 of them......pulled the rear lenses off and the bulbs are the 3157 "push in" type.

My title says 97 but date-of-manufactur is 6/97. They must have switched over or something.

Strange.

Check your relay, switch and bulbs. Relay is underneath the knee guard under the steering column, bulbs are self explanitory and the switch would be the last option.

Why would the switch be the last problem. The switch is the last place that the wires are that close to shorting?

They're on separate circuits past that.

It would be the most expensive repair. A relay is like 5 bucks, a bulb is like 2 a switch is like 90 from a dealer.

Ah. I practice the 'diagnose the problem and spend money on the right part the first time' mentality...

Rather than the 'throw parts at it, starting with the cheapest part first, until it works' mentality.

My '97 did that. I had a short in my trailer wiring harness. If you're wired to tow, check that too. Had to fix up a couple wires, but problem solved so far
