From what i understand that is actually fairly common, myself ive never seen that exactly but i could believe it as when i changed the oil pressure switch on mine it did let off pressure and if left unchecked long enough im sure it could get much worse. i know that when they are going bad they start to leak and it is easilly checked by unplugging the electrical connector that plugs into it. but as he stated it didnt seem to be on the side of the engine i would still check the valve cover gasker/bolts then rear main seal but if this is something you may be worried about pop that connector off and see if you hear any pressure come out do it when the vehicle is off so you can hear the hiss of the pressure releasing.

Does anyone have a part number for the oil filter adapter o-rings? I have an '87. I heard there is a kit with all three rings for the later engines but for the early 4.0's like mine you have to buy them all separately.

yep sounds like its a rear main seal leak, the valve covers dont leak that badly if you said its about a cd size drip, unless its just completely shredded

According to a buddy, an ASE Master mechanic, the best way to determine where a leak is coming from is first to THOROUGHLY clean the engine (steam, Gunk, etc.) Get ALL the crap and residue off, and then run it for a week, then get underneath and look for the oil. Since leaking oil always drips down (rather than up), you're looking for the highest point at which there is visible oil. That should be where it's leaking from, not above or below. I tried it; it works for me.

When was the last time you changed your oil? Did you bump the Oil Pressure Sending Unit and crack it when changing the filter? That would cause oil to shoot out when you are driving. It is right above the oil filter.
