I fashioned this garden hose attachment many years ago out of a PVC cap and hose end glued together and drilled a 1/16" hole in the cap. I've cleaned dozens of greasy/dirty engines with it and engine degreaser.
When cleaning an engine you want to use as little water as possible but still have enough pressure to knock most of the crud off. I would never use a pressure washer on an engine.

all these ideas sound pretty great. hopefully my engine can look real nice... and the underbody. after i pressure wash that hopefully it doesnt look like it needs to much restoration.
FWIW, I detailed cars for 10 years and we would use a 50/50 mix of simple green and water.
Spray the exterior of the vehicle w water so the degreaser mix does not run on the fenders and streak.
Open the hood and heavily spray (w a spray bottle) your engine/engine compartment with the mix while your engine is cold ("the pores of the metal are still cold" aluminum reacts funny to some chemicals when warm).
Allow degreaser to sit for about 5-10 minutes.
THEN start your vehicle and begin pressure washing/rinsing.
Sweep back and forth and don't "dwell" in one spot for too long. Also, frequently run the water over painted surfaces to prevent paint streaking.
Allow to run for 10-15 min to warm to operating temp. This allows the water to run out/evaporate from the "sensitive areas" where it would normally be an issue on a turned off vehicle.
The biggest problem comes when people douse their vehicle's engine w water THEN try to start it. ESPECIALLY in foreign high end cars.
Lastly, some douse their engine w/ armorall and allow to dry.

I power wash my engine frequently, then just push it out of the bay to the vacs and it dries while I clean the interior. I've never had any problems with power washing my engine, I just don't hold the nozzle close enough that it'll break RTV seals or cut into a hose.
