Engine needs to be cool and there is a product here called "Gunk Engine Brite". You spray that on a cool to slightly warm engine and wait 20-30 minutes then hose it off. I do it at the carwash so I have good water pressure but have done it at home with a garden hose.

Cover the distributor with a zip-lock baggie, and don't spray the intake, other than that you should be fine. You might get some water in an electrical connection, causing hard-start, but a little WD40 will straighten that up.
GUNK is awesome. I used it on my old truck and dirtbikes all the time. I'm probably going to use it on the Jeep this weekend to get rid of all the oil on the engine from the bad valve cover gasket.

Brake clean may not be the best thing for a engine because it takes moisture out of plastic, and is highly flamable... Belive me ive seen a uhaul burn to the ground cause a newbie at the shop I was working at was looking for vaccum leaks with brake clean
the stuff we have at work is non flammable so it takes that fun part away and as you said it will dry out rubber and plastic so you have to watch what you spray it on but as far as the block and all non rubber surfaces it works just fine.
