YOU CAN NOT USE A GL-5 OR GL-4 gear oil in the AX-15!!!

the reason being... The brass syncros in our transmissions get eaten up with the gl-4/gl-5 gear oil. Redline is one of the best gear oils you can stick in our transmissions.

you NEED a GL-3 gear oil.

Getting ready to order some of the Redline for my Jeep and noticed the MTL vs MT difference.....

http://www.germanautoparts.com/Chemi...20oils/Redline

Which should I be ordering?

MTL is the synthetic stuff.
MT is standard
Then theres 75W-90

I have 127K on my Jeep and no knowledge of if the PO serviced the trans. I assume synthetic would not be a wife choice here?

Thanks.

PS: Where do you guys get your Redline? How much are you paying?

EDIT: Just noticed.....these are all GL-4 & GL-5 rated. Is there another Redline oil rated at GL-3 or are these OK for the Jeep? Per the above post, sounds as though 4 & 5 must be avoided.

Doing some more reading online.....

Seems the Redline MT-90 is rated GL-4 and will work for the Jeep's manual trans.

Anyone confirm this?

redline is a meant for the NV3500 (00-01 5speed) but it is still as close as you are going to get to GL-3. Like it has been posted before. Redline is the best thing you can give your 5speed because of the chemical make up. The only people who sell a GL-3 is napa and it is a light duty. I use it for doing flushes since it is like $10 a gallon. then after about 100 miles i change it out for redline.

redline GL-4 works

from their website:

Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified

And is 70W-80 the correct application? Or 75W-90?

either will work because they are specifically designed for brass syncros which is the most important part.

i use MTL

our owners manual suggest 75w-90

GL 3 will be impossible to find. GL 4 is totally fine to use, just NOT GL 5.

if youre really in a crunch you can use 10w 30 motor oil too. Just would need to change it after less miles.

Order has been placed. I called 10 local shops and NO ONE carried Red Line.

My order consisted of these same items (minus the catch pan and tools I already have )

I don't like to put maintenance off. Doing so will eventually come back to haunt you.

I'll report back with status. Also trying to get an intermitent stalling issue resolved, so will be doing misc work in the coming week.

Thx again for the help guys!

So the redline showed up, but the pump didn't.

So, I decided to have my mechanic do the fluid for me since I was going there to get my inspection, as well as the fuel filter replaced.

The stuff that came out of my trans was BLACK!!!! Not sure if it gets that dirty even with normal maintenance, but I don't think the PO ever did the service before.

Anyhow, only drove 30 miles since the fresh Redline was put in.....so far I've noticed some minor improvement in shifting. I want to put on a few more miles and see what it feels like before giving a better opinion.
