I've nearly got my transmission back in my Jeep after replacing the slave cylinder & clutch etc. What is the best transmission fluid should I use & what weight?
What should I use for the transfer case?
Thanks,
N.E. James

i use mobil 1 dextron III in my transfercase and type F ATF in my transmission. the ATF will keep you temp down better then just gear oil and will give your syncros longer life.

I take it the Mobil 1 Type F ATF can be used in a manual transmission as well? I have the AX-15 tranny, not an automatic.
Forgive me, I am a complete newb when it comes to working on anything automotive. The only thing I've really done is changed oil & installed struts & lowering springs on a car.
Where can this be purchased? I entered it in google, & it came up @ Sears?

i to have the AX-15 and i use type F ATF in it. like i said it keeps it cooler and the syncros tend to last longer. i use Dextron III/IV based ATF in my transfer case though. now the mobile 1 version of this is not sold in SoCal anymore due to some stupid law or something...but that is what i have in there before i couldn't find it anymore.

That's what it is, Gear oil for manual transmissions. And in my opinion about the best you can buy. Stuff isn't cheap though. But for the amount of time between gear oil changes, and the amount of abuse we subject these jeeps to, I think it's a worth while investment.
What's the capacity of the manual trans? How many bottles of the Redline MTL 90 are needed for a full flush?

a little under 4 quarts. Not really a flush to it, there's two holes on the side of the tranny that would fit the end of your 3/8" drive ratchet without a socked on it. bottom one is to drain, top one is to fill, you fill it up til it reaches the bottom of the fill hole.

I thought I red that you shouldn't use Syncromesh, but, I can remember for what reason. Maybe because it's not yellow metal friendly? I don't remember. I'm going to Sears this afternoon.
