Ok 1988 Cherokee 4.0. Auto backfires misses unless under load, now won't stary, sputters and dies smells flooded.
Ok here's an update, finally got it fired up today by turning the TPS way up it ran at about 2100 rpm and dried to die down a couple times.then it would sound like it was smoothing out and go up to 3000 rpm and fluctuate back and forth

 

How longs it been since its had a tuneup?

 

Check for spark. Everything related to spark needs to be checked. Plugs, wire, distributor cap, rotor, that coil pack thing that's connected to the center wire (can't remember what's it's called). A bad cps will cause a no spark situation also.

 

New cps tbs fuel pump and filtér new distributor and more

 

It's an ignition coil. It provides the spark for the distributer cap. You'll know when it quits working as no plug will get spark.

 

Ignition coil... That's what I meant lol!

 

I would do a compression test, coolant pressure test, and a fuel pressure test to start with. does it do anything else?

 

ok I got it running by unplugging the coolant temp sensor and manifold temp sensor. I can plug the coolant temp back in after it is warm and it will drive but no power at all barely can take off

 

I don't know if you have checked this ..but a vaccum leak to the fuel pressure regulator will give the same symptoms if the regulator is old and worn
