alright boys and girls, i got the bumper and it is all primed and painted, i am going to try and mount it tonight when i get off work, annnndddd here is what i did!
ordered the stage 3 cherokee bumper from JCR off-road (great stuff! took about a month and a week to get to lincoln ne from MI, only 2 days for shipping but they were back ordered like crazy, but it was well worth the wait!) it cost me 740$ with 2 D-rings and a hitch reciever.
it was shiped in the bare metal with a light coat of oil on it to keep it from rusting. when i got it i got 2 of the 3M fine sanding bricks and went to work on it, sanding every surface and crevice, and when i say every one i mean EVERY single last inch.
after about 2 hours of sanding i washed it down 2 times with mineral spirits to pull the oil and metal flaces off the bumper.
i then sprayed it with 2 coats of the rustolium self etching primer. at that point it was about 2 in the morning so i called it a night hahaha
then next day, after about 20 hours or so for the primer to dry, my girlfriend and i used 400 grit sandpaper and lightly sanded down the primer, then once again used mineral spirits to wash it down, did this 2 times again.
i then hung the bumper and tire carrier from the rafters in the garage with bailing wire and started to spray!. i used the duplicolor truck bed liner, and it turned out really really good, the texture is exactly what i was looking for and all there is to do now is to mount it, which im hoping i can get that done tonight haha. all togeather i sprayed about 3 cans on the carrier and 5 cans on the actual bumper.
materials and prices:
-8 cans of duplicolor truck bed lining: 7.99 per can (my dad retails it so i got it for 5 each)
-2 cans rustolium self-etching primer: 6.89 per can (walmart)
-2 fine grit sanding spounges: 2.49 each (ace)
-1 package of 400 grit sandpaper: 3.99 (autozone)
-1 roll blue painters tape: 4.99 (target)
-1 spray paint gun: 2.99 (ace, this thing was sweet, it helped from fatigue and with even coating!)
all together i have put about 12 hours into painting and coating this bad boy and i can confidently say that if it peets or cracks it was not prep work or aplication errors. i dont have any pics up yet cuz i am at work right now but they will be up either tonight or tomorrow morning! if you have any questions at all feel free to ask!
