Default Battery overcharged issues ..alternator upgrade 160AMPS

hello, been having some starting starting issues. hard to crank, as if the battery was low on cranking power.

I went to two different auto parts store to get it checked out. The battery check up as being good. but it was overcharged. I have checked it a few times after a few trips and I seem to get always between 12.6-12.78 volts.

My last battery lasted less then a year and I really don't want to kill this one.if there is a problem.

I also preformed a diode test. and I got a super low reading. the alternator could possibly be the culprit of my issues. any thoughts ?

2000 Jeep Cherokee 162K ODO
3 month old battery AGM Batetry
Upgraded 4ga cables

Since this is my DD for the next 6 months, I don't want to have any issues and perhaps take this time to change the alternator to the 160AMP unit from the Durango 5.9L.

I found this and I just wanted to make sure to run it by the Cherokee Experts and feet their thoughts. I know that there would be some grinding to make it fit.

6 groove pulley, same as the cherokee alternator. correct? should be pretty much a direct swap.

I got two questions for you

Have you measured the voltage while idling, revving a bit, and also while having the lights on and blower on.

and the second one, have you tested your starter, it can be the issue and not the battery or alt, mine went slow within a few months, checked everything you are doing (battery, alt, cables) and at the end it was the starter.

Good luck

Have alternator and battery tested.... Check grounds and cables. FWI, charging and voltage regulation/distribution is done by and within the COMPUTER. The battery and alternator only store and provide the power for those operations.

I'm going to order the 160amps. I have already started to grind off the alternator bracket. Tomorrow morning I'll be picking up the alternator, since the 160amp is special order only.

yeah, I read that the ECU has a lot to do with the electric system on the 2000 XJ.

Thx for the info.

could also be on it's way out. jeep does have over 160K and it looks to be the original unit.

The overcharging issue has been solved.

The 160amp alternator that I installed was the unit from O'Reillys Part # 13915

Minimal grinding on the braket and the supporting bracket had to be grind just a bit.

All seems to be working correctly so far.

Anyone know on how to correct the Volt Meter gauge inside the cluster? it;s always read lower then it should be. Could it be a sensor somewhere that I can easily swap out ?

Not sure if this helps but I had an issue where my 2000 xj with a brand new replacement alternator would over charge my stuff, I was able to measure the output while driving and at times it would reach almost 18v. It turned out to be my Voltage regulator which sucks cause on a 2000 its built into the PCM.

As you can see here 15v is not normal for just cruising on the highway

Issue 3 - YouTube

I did have to replace the PCM awhile back. It kept sending the AC compressor the wrong voltage..it was basically always ON..with he clutch engaged. As soon as I got it replaced, the AC unit worked fine.

Did you ever fixed the over charging issue?
