Bargain or money pit??
I'm posting for the time on Jeep Cherokee forums, and I'm hoping to get some good opinions on this Cherokee I found, I've always wanted one but I've been in school for the last year and a half and haven't had the money for one. But I a friend of mine has one he is selling its a 93 Cherokee 2 door sport 190k 4.0 inline 6 automatic 4x4 very clean and only a little rust on the rocker panels only 350$ with one problem the front drive shaft came apart and took out the transfer case and broke the fuel line when it did. The line is easy to fix but I'm not sure how hard the transfer case is going to to replace and what case to get I've looked online and I see there are a few cases it could be? I was wondering how to tell what transfer case it has, and if its going to be worth potting money into, anything suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Kinda sounds like it was rode hard and put away wet. If u expect it to be a DD, it'll probably be a money pit to keep it on the road doing all the maintenance that the PO neglected to do. LOL
If it runs and everything looks good aside from the obvious damage I would jump on it with a quickness. But if it's taken abuse then you need to make sure that the transmission & rest of the drive line is ok or else it can get expensive.

The "little rust on the rocker panels" could turn into big rust somewhere else you haven't seen yet.
Replacing hard parts is easier than battling rust. Rust never sleeps.

The way I see it. If it is only $350 you can't go wrong. If you decide not to get her running again you can always part her out and make your money back plus more. That is, if it isn't all trashed. Or you can even save it for a parts car if you find yourself another one that doesn't have as many problems.

You're entering into an unforgiving world of Jeeping, a sickness! You'll be main-lining JEEP before you know it!
Seriously though, rust and routine maintenance are the norms for XJ's. Unless you scored a garage-kept XJ from the Southwest EVERY INCH has to be checked for rust. XJ's are awesome rigs! The engines are very forgiving and almost bulletproof. And even when the rust looks like its about to consume the entire body they seem to hold themselves together with some mystical force! They're like the Jedi's of the 4x4 world!
While my experience is limited to only 1 XJ I can tell you that once I got her running good it was very easy to stay that way. Junkyards and jeep forums will be your best friends! There are plenty of parts from other makes/models that will swap onto an XJ with little or no modifications. Transfer cases are not hard to rebuild or repair.
Like the other's said, for only $350 GET IT! Good luck!
