ball joints - Is the knuckle supposed to be up against the rubber boot?

It's odd for me to post this. I have seen many photos of ball joints on XJs but I can not figure out if the whole weight is resting on the rubber boots of the ball joints. Just does not seem like I have the whole understanding. It seems like the rubber would just rip after not to long.
Am I missing something?

the ball joint tapered shaft seats into the knuckle (on top & bottom) the rubber boot just protects dirt from getting into the joints.
no pressure is on the boot.... but it is compressed in that space...somewhat.
