Bad Vibrations from transfer case
Hello everyone sorry for the novel here, my Cherokee has been pretty much trouble free in the 8 months I've owned it. However, slowly my crappy Dana 35 pinion bearing had been going out.
Well the other day it decided to destroy itself. I assume the bad vibrations caused the the u joint straps to back out, thus my rear drive shaft came falling out while doing 65 mph on the interstate, Ouch!
Well I got the jeep home and front wheel drive, and began swapping in my Chrysler 8.25 from the JY. The install went pretty smooth and was relatively easy only ran into two problems.
The rear brake cables were too short? The 8.25 came out of a XJ so I dunno why their so short?
And the big problem, I got a pretty bad vibration which seems like its coming from the transfer case. I assume when the drive shaft feel out it messed some stuff up. My buddy said it might be one of the shafts in there, I'm pretty new to jeeps so I don't know what shaft it is.
Is this pretty easy to replace or should I just go get another transfer case from the JY? The Jeep in question is a 96 w/ AJ15 and nv231 case.

Ok looks like my transfer case might have some cracks too, so I'm just gonna look to replace the whole unit.
I read that the 231 was changed from 21 spline to 23 spline in 91.
Does it matter what transmission the donor xj had? say would a 231 from a 99 with an auto fit my 96 with the ax15?

All ax15s have a 21 spline output shaft, which means thhe input shaft on the tcase is 21 spline, you have to have one with 23 splines so it has to come off of an xj 91 or newer from an automatic aw4
I just went through this issue on my 95. Found one for sale here in the for sale section for 50$ drove a little ways to get it, but was well worth it.

Bzzzrt all AX-15s are 23 spline, post 1990 AW4s too. However the length of the shaft differs. (lol)
