Quick question
Can I just take off the valve covers and replace the bad one without boring out the head and have still be good for the winter?

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter
Pretty sure the head has to come off in order to replace the lifters. What makes you think you have a bad lifter?
You need to remove the head to get to them.
