Sorry for the newbie question but I did a search and could not figure it out, so here goes:

Adding a 3 1/2 RE lift with 15X8 Wh, 31X10.5 tires to a '98 XJ. Have been told that the backspacing can be from 4" to 4.75". Would like to have the minimal tire sticking out with good street ride and off road clearance. What do you all recommend? Thanks, Dave

Stock rims are like 5.25 or something backspacing..3.75 would stick out the furthest...Based on info I have read off other sites you want 4.5 or less numerically in back spacing..basically anything from 3.75-4.5 of backspacing for the bigger lifts..I am sure some of the others have actual first hand experience but that's what I have read and me I am sticking to about 4.25" of backspacing to be save..

Running the same lift I run 15x8 Craiger soft 8's on 4" of BS wheels. Never had a complaint yet.

Here's 4" backspacing:

It sticks out about 1/2". Not too bad. I have since changed to 15x8 3.75" backspacing and it sticks out alot more.
