there should be a couple of small clips on on each end of the shock. Pop those out and they should just lift off. I replaced mine a few weeks ago and it only took about 5-10 minutes.

My 99 Sport has the clip at the bottom and two bolts at the top. The bottom clip slides to unlock the strut but you have to take the bolts out of the top. The new ones should have the bracket already on them. I don't know about the earlier years. Put your Jeep info in your profile it makes it easier to help.

Yeah that ring should just pop off and the new shock will come with a new one and if it's a '96 or earlier there my or may not be a clip on the other side(the ones I took off didn't have one, but the ones I put on did, go figure). Mine is a '96 so I had no screws or anything to mess with, I can't speak for the post '97s but they may have a bracket to remove...
