Default BA 10 replacement.

I have a chance to buy a Renix era Jeep with a blown BA 10 tranny. I know that these standard trannies were replaced by other trannies with little or no modifications to the vehicle. Can anyone define which trannie to use and what if any mods had to be done.

AX-15, and I think it just needs the hydro fittings from the donor. I may be wrong, but that is what I recall...good luck!!

Tranny mount too, and like I said, I could be missing some...

1989.5-1993 AX-15 is pretty much a drop-in, right down to using the same clutch kit. Take the transfer case with it, or change out your input to the 23-spline (the AX-15 is a 23-spline output, the BA-10 is a 21-spline.)

1994-1999 AX-15 will require a hydraulic refit as well, since it changed from that wretched "internal" slave cylinder to a more reliable "external" version.

And, of course, the NV3550 was used 2000-2001 - but I think you'll also need to grab the driveshafts for that swap. The NV3550 uses the same bellhousing as the "external" AX-15.

FYI - if you have to "assemble" your refit kit, the AX-15 and NV3550 can also be found in the Dakota and (I think) Ram 1500. The AX-15 is also the five-speed of choice for the 1993 ZJ 4.0L, and the only difference between the XJ and TJ/YJ versions of the AX-15 and NV3550 is that the transfer case is "clocked flatter" in the TJ/YJ version - swap the tail housing to fix this.

The Dodge version will not directly mate up to the AMC engine, as the bellhousing pattern is different (the Dodge uses the LA-block pattern, the Jeep uses the AMC pattern.) Swap the bellhousing to fix.

NB: The pilot diameter on the very early AX-15 is the same as the BA-10 (I've pulled one out of a 1990 that was the same size - .585" or so,) but the later ones will be around 7/8", and require a pilot bushing swap. Get one from an early 1970's CJ with the 304ci V8 and three-speed to make this work.

Some floor pan rust and it is a 2WD which I failed to mention but 5-90 thanks for all the info on that. It comes with a AW4 and 231 but as yet no D30 to make the conversion. But I just desire a DD that is a Jeep P/U right now.
