hi looking to put a ford 8.8 under my 89 cherokee it currently has drum brakes in the rear but the ford 8.8 has disc brakes . is this gonna open up a can"O"worms...

No, it should not.
Just do a search and find one of 100 posts on how to properly do the swap. Including on how to make the rear disc brakes work. Its very much worth the "trouble".
Just make sure the rear has the same gear ratio as the front or your gonna burn something up. Unless you have 2wd then it really dont matter.
