Lots of welding and fabbing. Check out treks or ballistic fabs has some nice truss' that should take out some guess work. Check out the builds on Pirate

First off you need to decide how big of tire you want to go. If your thinking you'll ever want to go over a 36 then you need to go 60 front. I know to many guys that built a D44 and wish they D60 when they through on some 37's or 38's cause they just won't hold up.

Now with that aside you need to think of all the basics first. Spring mounts, shock mounts, LCA mounts, UCA mounts, track bar, swaybar links, drive shafts, bolt patterns, matching widths. There's a lot of little stuff that comes into play but these are the basics when your comparing it to how your D30 axle is setup. Of course when your doing this much fab work you want to be upgrading from the D30 setup.

As stated above check out some of the builds on pirate. Also there are some D44 builds on this thread as well.

Just depends on if you what width you want to run? Yes they are going to be wider than stock. Would I bother with shorting them no. The wider stance will give you better stability off road.

pirate4x4.com , its a non vehicle specific forum. Lot of knowledgeable gear heads on there. However, they can be very flame boyent to newbies if you ask common knowledge questions.
