Default Axle Swap 98 JeepXJ

I have a 98 Jeep XJ Sport, purchased less than a year ago. I'm a beginner and learning as I go. Figured out my pinion gear in rear diff was damaged previously and not fixed. Since has gotten worse. Also found that I have 3.55 gearing. I found axles off a 97 Jeep XJ Country guy was parting out with 4.10 gearing. So I picked them up because it was cheaper that paying to have a new ring and pinion gear installed and changing gearing front and back to 4.10. However, I found that the guy kept the front axle shafts so he would have spares. My question is... Can I reuse the axle shafts from my 98 with 3.55 and put them in the 97 4.10 housing? Are they interchangeable?

Yes, as far as I know all the 91+XJ, ZJ, and TJ Dana 30 shafts will interchange.

Thank you. I hope to crack into it this weekend and have it done in a day or two.

Default Ran into problems

So, I started my axle swap and ran into a problem. First, these 4.10 gear axles were not. They are 3.55, same as my original. No worries, no need to change front then, since only rear pinion was damaged. I tear into everything and find 2 blockades. 1st, my Jeep has antilock rear, so the tone ring and wheel speed sensor. Replacement is a year older, not the same setup. So I take axle shafts out so I can take off brake back plate so I can use my axles with tone ring and back plate with sensor... 2nd problem. My axles are 27 spline, replacements are 30 spline. Now what? I need advice. What is my best option? Disconnect abs sensor and use the replacement as is? Is swapping the carrier out an option? Because the carrier has to match the axle splines right? I may have gotten in over my head.

Are you working on the rear axle? If so it is a Dana 35 since it has abs, and the other rear axle you got is a Chrysler 8.25. The Dana 35 Is a weak axle, the Chrysler 8.25 is much stronger so I would swap the whole axle in and delete the abs. To swap the axle you will need different u bolts and you may have to use the rear driveshaft out of the other Jeep.

Default Thank you.

Yes, rear axle. Figured out last night it is Chrysler 8.25. Hopefully I won't need the driveline, because I didn't get that. Just took the axles and they guy was scrapping whatever I didn't take. U boots are a minor issue, I'm sure I can get those at an auto parts place, driveline.... could be a problem. Hope to finish today after church, we will see how it goes. Thanks for the reply.
