I'll be changing my differential fluids & gaskets this upcoming spring and I just need to confirm that these are the axles that I have. I am also unsure what part was hanging down but I decided to take a picture of it..how important is it & what exactly is it? It's pretty much rotten and hanging on by a string.
I'm fairly certain the front is a Dana 30 because on quadratec the only parts they have for the front axle on the XJ is for years 84-01.
The rear looks like a chrysler 8.25?
Am I right?
Pictures by number (attachments)
1- front axle
2- unsure of what part, left side
3- unsure of part, right side
4-rear axle
5- engraving on rear axle
Here's the engraving on the front axle:

And here's another engraving on the rear:

What year cherokee?
Front axle is either a HP D30 or a LP D30 depending on the year.
Rear axle is either a 27 spline or 29 spline 8.25 depending on the year.
Those things hanging are bumpstops. Is it a stock jeep? Is it a daily driver?
If you just daily drive the thing honestly you don't need those bumpstops.
The point of them is to stop the rear tire from digging into the fenders when the axle drops or flexes.

Front is the LP (Low Pinion) D30.
The rear is a 29 spline C8.25.
If i were you i'd just unbolt the rear bumpstops and leave them off.

Oh no, they're not expensive at all. They're just one of those parts on a jeep that is there but you don't really need it. (unless you actually flex your suspension to full flex and rely on the bumpstops - which you don't.)
Unless you're one of those people that needs to have every part on their jeep that came with it i'd just put that $34 towards something else like a tuneup or something.
Happy to keep another jeep on the road.
