Default Axel question

I have a 99 cherokee. can i put in a front axle from at 1990 cherokee? they have the same gear ratio, but as i understand it, the 1990 has some kind of vacuum system, while the 98+ do not. Is this true?

I'm not 100% sure, but I am told by my Mechanic that 97+ doesn't interchange cuz they changed the way the vacuum system works. You should be able to pick up an axle relatively cheap, the pick and pulls in NY get about $85 for an axle.

There are times when living in New Mexico is bad. The cheapest I have found in a JY is 350....still not terrible, but more than I think a used axle should be. I find plenty of older axles on Craigslist, but I dont think that they are plug and play with a 99. The local pick and pull operation is out of axles that i know fit my 99. I will just keep waiting until a cheap one shows up. Luckily mine hasnt cratered yet, just makes noise.

don't put in a vac disco axle. you don't have the vac lines running from your t-case to operate it.
well, don't put in a 90 axle even if it doesn't, your calipers won't bolt up to the mounts on the axle, and they have the smaller u-joints unless it has abs.

just wait, you'll eventually find the one you need. and to be sure it's a direct fit, look for 97-99.
