ax5 burning smell

ax5 burning smell
have a 95 2.5L with an ax5 trans. just went up the grapevine today(a very long and steep hill for those not in ca), could only do about 50-55 with 30" tires. started to notice a slight burning smell afterwards, like diff oil or trans burning. possibly too much stress on the trans? any ideas?
