ax15 was whining and now cannot shift into gear
Hello all, I am new here. I just got a 94 xj, 4.0L, ax15. I knew when I purchased it that the trans was going to need attention. It was whining when the clutch was not depressed and today I lost the ability to shift into any gear. Also the clutch won't engage anymore, if I push it in to start it even in neutral it jumps as if I attempted to start it without pushing in the clutch. How bad is it and where should I start to troubleshoot? I have always been a Scout guy (primitive but reliable) and this is making me lean back toward the Scouts. I've never dealt with a hydraulic clutch before. It was low on fluid when I got it and I put the only gear oil they had at Checker in it when I first bought it: Mobil-1 75w90. Any advice is appreciated greatly!

The clutch uses brake fluid NOT gear oil. You will have to drain the whole system and flush it out.
Sounds possibly like the clutch release bearing may have broken up. This will require removal of the gearbox to put right. Check the clutch and replace this if it is badly worn as it will save time later.
Get a transmission specialist to check the gearbox. Either get them to overhaul it or fit a used one from a junkyard.

how does your clutch fluid look? either hydraulic or clutch related.
I have a whiny 5sp at ~215K but it still works when the hydraulics are in working order
