I have a 1996 Cherokee 4.0 5 speed. I'd like to change my trans fluid in the very near future because it kind of whines when you hit the gas...not so great to have a trans low on fluid. Anyway, I'm searching for the correct fluid. I know that the manual recommends GL5, but that contains sulfur and will probably kill the synchros, so I don't wanna do that. Some people are saying Redline MT90 which is too expensive for me right now. Someone else said Syncromesh is fine, which is what I was going to use. Now I hear Mopar is recommending 10w30 motor oil!? What the hell...has anybody tried this? I just don't see motor oil holding up where gear oil is needed. Any personal experiences using the motor oil?
either redline MT-90 or Mopar 10W30 motor oil. The GL3 lube recommended is no longer available so Chrysler has actually started using motor oil as a lube for AX-15s. Go one of those two routes. Think about it this way: you could skimp out and save $10-$20 by getting a cheaper oil, mess up your syncros and be out the $1,000+ it'd cost for a rebuild. Or you can go2 summitracing.com and pay $40 for a Gallon of Redline MT-90 and know you have a proper lube in there.

Yea I guess if I have to spend the money I will. It's just inconvenient because no local stores have the redline. Is the synchromesh any good? It's supposed to be fine for yellow metals.
Idk. I know MT-90 isn't carried by local stores, just order it from summit racing. thats what I'm gonna do when it comes time that i'm gonna change my gear oil. It might be a bit of a hassle, but if you wanted to you could probably go to your local Chrysler dealer and get Mopar 10W30. That is the manufacturer recommended service fill for the AX-15 since they stopped making the original spec GL3

We have several Amsoil dealers on this site (including myself).
Why not PM them for prices on 1 gallon of the correct fluid?
Might be cheaper than you think. Esp when you factor in the longer drain intervals !

i have tried a few things myself, i tried to use a low weight gear oil 60
and it was to thick. i was annoying hard to shift. the ax-15"s likes a lower weight oil. i tried the royal purple syn. MTF. 14 bucks a quart. i shifted like a dream but putting it in reverse was treat you had to wait i few seconds for the trans to stop spinning to get it in gear. so i ended up adding a little of that gear oil to the mix to slow it down. it works great now.
i would try the 30 weight oil and see how it performs..good luck

I suppose I'll try the Mopar 10w30 and let everybody know how it goes. I have a busy week this week, but it will be done next week. I don't see why I'd even bother getting Mopar brand, nothing is different other than the label, but I'm going to get in anyway in case there's some sort of "secret sauce" they use.
Oh, does anybody know what store I can get one of those nifty bottle pumps from that go on the neck of the bottle and come with like a foot or hose? I never saw them in any of the chain stores around here.

Granted my rig is a trail rig, and doesnt see high way driving, but I used Havoline 10w30.
No issues to date. Has about 20 miles at highway speeds and 16 hrs on trail. If I wasnt planning a T18 swapw a doubler I would have opted for a better oil, but this is a dispossable trans.
I traded a HO 4.0 head for my exterbal slave ax 15
