Default ax15 re-ish-build

the trans in the jeep currently grinds trying to shift into 3rd and will usually never actually engage. ive tried double clutch, rev matching, slamming the living **** out of the shifter, all to no avail. its extremely random i can get it into 3rd gear. all other gears will engage, but feel some what "mushy" when beginning to shift then engages rather harsh. also, going from any forward gear to reverse will usually grind at first till the jeep rolls a bit, then shifts fine.

clutch master and slave are both in good working order. trans oil was changed less than 6 months ago, still full.

it obviously needs to be pulled and torn apart. im guessing a syncro is bad... i have another ax15 (2wd) that shifted fine when i pulled it. both are pre 94's. i am cheap/broke and will be for some time...

questions:

since im obviously going to pull them both apart, how involved would swapping just the output shafts/tail sections be? as in how far apart do i need to go if that makes sense. or should i just take them both completely apart and use the best of each?

thanks in advance

Nope no gear oil, just 10w30 motor oil.

What needs to be pressed? I though it was all snap rings?

Motor oil is a big nono it destroys yellow synchronizers. To rebuild Ax 15 a hydrologic press is needed. Use Pennzoil synchromesh.

I read somewhere that the mopar part number for the tranny lube changed to 10w30 motor oil at one point.. forgot where I read that. I know a lot of guys who've used motor oil in other transmissions as well, but good to know. I'll pick up dome syncromesh for when I put it back together.

I'm not rebuilding it, just taking the good parts from the 2wd trans to fix the 4wd one.

As said above press is need unless you planning on swapping parts that just pull off by hand.....
